Modified Style
Portland FAQ
Q. What is Modified
Style Portland?
Modified Style Portland
is a fashion show fundraiser with a few lofty goals. We want to inspire people to
get creative, to design, to be inspired. We also want to showcase sustainability
and show support for local non-profits. By utilizing found and donated scrap fabric
(no animal-based fabric, please!), in our fashion show, we aim to highlight how
easy--and fun!--it is to donate to worthwhile causes. With a big Silent Auction
and a DJ and a kick-ass raffle, this fashion show shows it’s easy to give.
Q. Is it a for-profit
venture?
While we figuratively
have always been a non-profit (donating all proceeds to our three charities), Modified
Style Portland is in the process of becoming a non-profit. You can be safe in the
knowledge that whether you donate products or money, pay admission or buy a raffle
ticket or a dress in the Silent Auction, all proceeds go toward putting on our show
and our fantastic charities.
Q. I have fabric.
How can I help?
Great! We love fabric.
If it's before January 1st, 2012, you can send it to us at:
Modified Style Portland
PO Box 10624
Portland, OR 97296
*Please, no animal-based
fabrics, including wool, leather, silk or felt. Thank you.
Q. I want to design.
How can I be involved?
Super! We've had amazing
designers in the past and are looking forward to meeting new talent. You don't need
any experience to design, just a desire to learn. Modified Style Portland 2012 is
separated into two categories of experience, so whether you've never held a sewing
needle before or you own your shop, there's a place for you.
Q. I want to model.
How can I be involved?
Our designers are
responsible for finding their own models, but if you’d like to be involved
you can always send us an email and we’ll see if we have space. Models can
be any size, weight, shape, gender or personality. We love ‘em all!
Q. I want to volunteer.
How can I help?
Super! Thanks so much!
We’ll have more information down the line on specific volunteer opportunities.
Feel free to drop us a line to
info@modifiedstyle.org
with the subject line “volunteer” if you’d like to be placed on
our list.
Q. I want to lend
a hand as a photographer/hair stylist/make-up artist/planning ninja/graphic designer/etc.
What should I do?
We would be thrilled
if you wanted to lend your skills to this awesome show. We can’t say for sure
at this time what we’ll need, as our needs are ever-changing, but please send
us an email at
info@modifiedstyle.org
with the subject line “I’m awesome” (or whatever skill you have)
and we’ll keep it on file and get back to you.
Q. I want to attend
to show support but I don’t really ‘get’ fashion. Should I still
come?
Of course! Even if
you don’t get fashion, even if you don’t know anybody, even if you’ve
never heard of one of our charities, come. Come and support lovely talent and learn
about awesome non-profits. We’d love to have you.
Q. My company wants
to sponsor Modified Style Portland. Where can I find out more?
Thank you. As we are
primarily donation-based, we depend on our sponsors to help provide the best possible
event. Contact us at
info@modifiedstyle.org
with the subject “sponsorship” and we will send you a sponsor sheet.
Q. When and where
is it?
Modified Style Portland
is an annual show; the next one will be held next May at a location to be determined --
doors open at 6pm. Past venues included the Secret Society Ballroom, the Jupiter
Hotel, and Disjecta. As soon as we finalize a venue we will update this information.
We have several really exciting options out there right now.
Q. What non-profits
are you raising money for?
We are raising money
and awareness for:
From their website:
Sisters Of The Road
exists to build authentic relationships and alleviate the hunger of isolation in
an atmosphere of nonviolence and gentle personalism that nurtures the whole individual,
while seeking systemic solutions that reach the roots of homelessness and poverty
to end them forever.
From their website:
Amy Sacks and Karli Covington,
the founders of The Pixie Project are committed to changing the image of a "rescue"
or shelter animal. While some animals come to the Pixie Project seeking medical
or behavioral attention not accessible in a typical shelter, many Pixie Project
"kids" are professionally trained, family friendly pets whose circumstances have
left them in need of a new home. We were founded on the the belief that no
one rescue or shelter can do it all. We are here in support of the underfunded,
understaffed and overcrowded facilities found in every community.
CHAP has an art factory housed
in NW Portland where kids make up their own rules and other programs occur in Portland
area Children's hospitals.
From their website:
Children’s Healing
Art Project (CHAP) offers one-on-one classes for children in isolation and group
classes in playrooms, lobbies and waiting rooms. CHAP classes include drawing, painting,
sculpture, computer animation, beading, mask making and jewelry. CHAP classes offer
a place where nervous energy is transformed into creative energy. Our common language
is based in the creative process of making art, which crosses all gender, age, and
cultural, religious and ethnic boundaries. CHAP classes offer an art experience
that engages and inspires -- where children can be seen for their artistic talents
and not for their diseases, diagnoses or disabilities.
